“Sometimes I think there are only two instructions we need to follow to develop and deepen our spiritual life: Slow down and Let Go.”
While the world seems to be moving in every direction I’ve been cultivating inner peace by moving slowly. Purposefully noticing and being present in every task I’m doing. Being in the moment, away from the distractions and scary news stories. Breathing here and now.
I’ve been considering another digital detox. I did a couple last year and it did me good. A complete dis-connection from news and social media. A period of time to direct my energy inward, re-connect with what makes me happy, free, excited, creative.
My mind tends to swirl with negative thoughts when it seems every week we are getting different messages and it’s not clear what is coming next. As soon as I feel that rushing in my chest, I step back and take a few minutes to ground myself.
Anything I enjoy; a hobby or talking with someone I trust is a good way to relax. I make it a point to be completely enthralled, to focus deeply on the task and let the world around me melt away.

It seems foreign to move slowly at first but it really is amazing how quickly you start to relax and feel content. When you walk across your home, be mindful of each step, don’t rush. Feel how your feet touch the floor; is it warm wood, soft carpet, cool tile?

Cook healthy food and eat it slowly. Chop every fresh ingredient while giving thanks. Play gentle music or nature sounds while eating. Sit at the table, savour your meal, take a break, sit back breathe then continue eating. If there’s a window, look out, thank the weather for whatever it’s doing. What do you see? Is there anything you hadn’t noticed before?

Being in a peaceful state becomes second nature when we learn to nurture moving slowly. My childhood was amazing and connecting with some of the hobbies that I learned at a young age give me great peace. One has always been reading. I began re- purchasing my favourite childhood books over the past years. Something about reading them take me back to warm summers, sitting under a tree on a blanket, lost in my own world. Nothing could possibly go wrong.

No matter what is going on in the world, changing our perspective can wash over us and bring calm. It’s important more than ever to appreciate the simple things in life and to be ok with quiet.

I’ve pulled out my Christmas carols and am enjoying getting lost in playing the piano; happy memories of family around the table, the smell of delicious food coming from the kitchen, music, toys, happiness.
Take time to move slowly today. As your body slows down so will your mind. Life is good. Everything is going to be ok.

Love,
Jennifer
