A Wellness Day

“Caring for myself is not self indulgent. Caring for myself is an act of survival.”

It’s 6pm, Friday.  The sun was shining 30 minutes ago then the weather switched.  I only noticed a storm had come in because the wind chimes on the patio began ringing quite violently.  I love wind chimes, they’re kinda spooky.  I had to step outside and secure a few things on the balcony so they wouldn’t blow away. The rain is falling sideways now and I can hear it tapping the windows, the wind whistling in gusts.

I decided to have a Wellness Day today;  A full day of self care. I think it’s very important for our mental and spiritual wellbeing to do something we really enjoy each day. Something outside of the mundane routine. I find it energizes and inspires me to do things like play the piano, do my nails or have an aromatherapy bath.  Today I did just that: yoga, meditation, sauna, a movie, nothing but take it slow, disconnect and breathe. I’d planned this days in advance and made sure the house was clean and the pantry was stocked so that I could do nothing but relax. This is how I spent my Wellness Day.

Morning Yoga

I like to start each day with a workout.  I change my routine daily from Yoga, to Cardio and light weights. Today was Vinyasa Flow.   Vinyasa is a gentle form of yoga that is in constant movement; one pose flows directly into the next with one pose on the in breath and the next while exhaling.  It also includes poses with push ups that strengthen and tone the arms.  I love how strong Vinyasa makes me feel.

Breakfast Smoothie

I have this smoothie every day after my workout.  I need my chocolate fix and this smoothie does just that and keeps me full until lunch time.  In the blender I add 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk, 1 frozen banana, 2 scoops of chocolate flavoured hemp protein powder, 1 tablespoon of almond butter and a dash of cinnamon.  I enjoyed mine this morning while relaxing on the couch and watching a skin care video by Angie at https://www.hotandflashy.com/

Infrared Sauna

Today was my first sauna session of the season.  I sauna every week from Fall through Spring.  Sauna is an amazing way to relax tense muscles, sweat out impurities and burn a lot of calories.  I take my face masks and skin care products and turn my hour sauna into a beauty/ meditation ritual.  I get my own suite with a shower, a robe, Scandinavian salts (for scrubbing your body after the sauna) and a 2 litre electrolyte drink to keep hydrated.  I applied a glycolic acid face mask and assumed the lotus position and drifted away into an hour-long meditation, Ooooommmmmmmm.   http://www.halsa.ca.

Dinner

As soon as I got home from my sauna I logged on to Skip The Dishes and pre-ordered dinner. No cooking today!  Tonight would be sushi and miso soup to warm me up with the wind and rain outside.   https://www.skipthedishes.com/

Juice

It was only 4pm however and dinner wouldn’t arrive until 7 so I made myself my favourite ABC + G (apples, beets, carrots and ginger) juice! I like to add Enerex Greens to my juice for the added probiotics and alcaline properties

No Makeup & Comfy Clothes

My point was to relax all day so this meant, no rushing, no schedule and no makeup.  I found my comfiest sweatshirt and sweatpants and wore them all day.

Reading Before Bed

I’ll turned off the computer early tonight and climb into bed with a book.  The Little Book of Hygge is all about the Scandinavian practice of feeling cozy and disconnecting, a good choice on a Wellness Day.  I hope you will feel inspired and declare a full day in the near future as your very own Wellness Day.
